Worship with us this weekend!

Online and in person we're seeing Esther's story with over the top places and villains

BWelcome to Worship!

This weekend, both online and in person, we’re in the book of Esther. We’re reminded that God only needs a tiny space to act, even if we aren’t sure what to do. We also see what will always be evil’s downfall. Our challenge is to have faith until it comes.

Our online worship, is a recording of our previous week's in person worship service. We do that so that we can share in a higher quality of worship together. Even though the service is recorded, Pastor John is down in the comments of the service every weekend.

Today as you prepare for online worship, find some bread and juice that you can use during Communion. They won’t be consecrated like the elements we use for our in person worship, but you can still share in the experience

You can find links to our YouTube Channel for the service, worship music, and a Spotify playlist for more music. You can click on the link to find our previous services too.

You can worship on Facebook, Sunday mornings at 9am, in person at 10:10am, or follow the service below at any time.

What comes next follows the same order of service that is used during in person worship.

Call to Worship
I'll say the words in regular type, and please reply with the words in bold
Leader: Lord we gather today because you have called us together
People: We haven't come to see a spectacle, but to be in worship
Leader: We know that as you call us, we don't always know what to do
People: But when you are still there, and you are still at work
All: Let us worship together today

Opening Prayer
Calling God,
We only ever act with part of the story, yet you still call to us. We try to be faithful, but we aren't always sure of what comes next. Often we feel like we are surrounded by characters that are larger than life, and larger than us, and we don't know if you are here. As we worship today, show us how you are still working, and how our faith in you brings hope that is unexpected.
In Christ's name, Amen.

Come Thou Almighty King--UMH 61

Prayers, Presence, Gifts, Service, Witness
As people of faith, we share who we are with each other. Below I invite you to share your joys and concerns, your prayer requests, and your offerings. You can use the link below, or in the comments

Share a joy, concern, and/or prayer request

Remember that you can mail in your offerings to:

Marceline UMC
321 N Kansas Ave
Marceline, MO 64658

You can also give online.

Take some time for some personal prayer, and take some time to give. This could be the time when you go online, or you write a check to the church, or when you make that commitment to give in a different way.

After the personal prayer, I'll say a prayer (if you're watching the video), and then join in saying the Lord's Prayer below.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen

Scripture Reading

Our scripture reading for worship is Esther 1:1-9
As you are able, please stand for the reading of God's Word.

1This is what happened back when Ahasuerus lived, the very Ahasuerus who ruled from India to Cush—one hundred twenty-seven provinces in all. 2At that time, Ahasuerus ruled the kingdom from his royal throne in the fortified part of Susa.3In the third year of his rule he hosted a feast for all his officials and courtiers. The leaders of Persia and Media attended, along with his provincial officials and officers. 4He showed off the awesome riches of his kingdom and beautiful treasures as mirrors of how very great he was. The event lasted a long time—six whole months, to be exact! 5After that the king held a seven-day feast for everyone in the fortified part of Susa. Whether they were important people in the town or not, they all met in the walled garden of the royal palace. 6White linen curtains and purple hangings were held up by shining white and red-purple ropes tied to silver rings and marble posts. Gold and silver couches sat on a mosaic floor made of gleaming purple crystal, marble, and mother-of-pearl. 7They served the drinks in cups made of gold, and each cup was different. The king made sure there was plenty of royal wine. 8The rule about the drinks was “No limits!” The king had ordered everyone serving wine in the palace to offer as much as each guest wanted. 9At the same time, Queen Vashti held a feast for women in King Ahasuerus’ palace.

Leader: This is the word of God, for the people of God

People: Thanks be to God!

Spirit of the Living God--UMH 393

Today's Message: Act 1: The Beginning
In a comic book movie, this would be the origin story. It sets up how we get to where we're going, but like any good movie expect there to be twists and turns all over the place.

Holy Communion

Blest Be the Tie that Binds--UMH 557

Benediction

Let us go from here knowing that you are at work Lord, even in times when it feels like the so many others are bigger than us. Let us go knowing that they can't compare to you, that even when we can't see you, or feel you, or even when we struggle in knowing you, you are still guiding your faithful people. Let us go knowing you are with us, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Go in peace
